But once the president made his announcement, many immigration groups said it was less of a victory and more of a bittersweet moment. Thanks to the Presidents much over-due actions these families will face relief from the constant possibility and threat of deportation, and will be able to better fight against workplace exploitation given their qualifying work permits, New Immigrant Community Empowerment Executive Director Valeria Treves said in a prepared statement. At the same time, we are deeply saddened that so many immigrant workers, who do not have U.S. citizen children, have been left out of this deferred action program. Despite not having children in this country, millions of undocumented immigrant workers have contributed for years to the economic well-being of this nation, and deserve equality. In response to Obamas speech, activist group Desis Rising Up and Moving held a special rally at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights Thanks to the brave immigrants around the country who have fought for President Obama to provide relief to their families, we no have relief for others, Naim Islam, a so-called Dreamer and DRUM youth member, said at the rally. However, that is still only a fraction of the total number of people who need relief, relief that they deserve. According to reports, Obamas order could protect up to five million immigrants, but only if they fall under a set list of qualifications that includes having children who are United States citizens and have lived in the country for five years. These stipulations cut out a number of people who have lived in the country for years but do not have children who are citizens or have no children at all, like Samsurnahar. I was forced to migrate to the United States after being targeted by the current ruling party in Bangladesh, Samsurnahar said. We cannot benefit from President Obamas administrative relief because we are recent immigrants and dont fall into the criteria ... We ask Obama, What happens to the millions of people like myself and my family who are not eligible for administrative relief?

Op-ed: Bosses Need To Step Up For Their Trans Employees | Advocate.com

Unfortunately, there are far fewer workplace examples like Tim Cook for transgender people, and many employees who are understanding their gender identity or transitioning face intense confusion and discrimination from their colleagues. While Laverne Cox, the star from Orange Is the New Black,writer and advocate Janet Mock , and Lauren Scott , the former Republican nominee in Nevadas 30th Assembly District, are bringing issues of gender identity to the national consciousness, there is still a tremendous amount of work needed to increase cultural competency and social equity. In most states, an employee can be terminated based on their actual or percieved gender identity. Progress is being made, but only 18 states and the District of Columbia have passed specific laws against discrimination on the basis gender identity or expression. The workplace can be a very closeted and lonely experience. This is why the responsibility to improve social equity in the workplace needs to be placed on administrators and managers. As a professor at University of San Franciscos School of Management, my goal is to provide a voice to marginalized communities by creating a generation of administrators, managers, and leaders who are culturally competent and aware of complex issues of identity and how that relates to the workplace. My research explores the roles managers and public administrators play in social equity, and what I see, more and more, is that a productive work environment embraces diversity and allows individual employees to feel comfortable in their roles. This directly impacts a companys bottom line, especially when working with clients who are diverse, and creates a more engaged workplace. In the past few decades, there have been several high-profile and unacceptable terminations of transgender employees.

Yet, the men (with no female representation) who created our government were fallible men who, on closer examination, were no more perfect than men and women are today. And the Constitution that we just praised did not give African-Americans full citizenship, and it took years and years before it was changed to give women the right to vote. Even our impressive Constitution was not without faults, but Americans had the good sense to make the changes it needed. We cannot deny that the Constitution was the organizing document that created a country giving free people the opportunity to succeed and thrive, regardless of who they are. We can speak freely, worship freely and live our lives freely. It created a series of checks and balances that kept the government from taking too much control. It operates for the greater good and protects its citizens. We are thankful for an America that started with so much promise and wisdom and has progressed, overcoming obstacles and removing barriers, to the great country that it is today and will be tomorrow. But we will also be giving thanks for amazing family and friends and, of course, turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie.

It Gets Worse: Russia's Kremlin Targets Lgbt Youth Support | Advocate.com

In July 2013, Patriarch Kirill I , leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, deemed same-sex marriage "a very dangerous sign of the apocalypse," a sentiment that appeals to Putins conservative base. Julie Dorf, a senior adviser at the Council for Global Equality, argues that Putin relies on the church to legitimize his rhetoric, and in turn, the church gets greater political access. Homophobic Acts: Inane to Olympic In June the Human Rights Campaign released a report on the state of affairs for LGBT people in Russia to mark the one-year anniversary of President Putin signing into law the ban on so-called gay propaganda. The report, titled simply "Russia: Year in Review," catalogued the law's far-reaching impacts. Among the more absurd applications of the law are an elementary school that was fined because children there were allowed to exchange Valentine's Day cards with students of the same gender, and a rating of 18+ for a Sims video game that allows characters to be in same-sex relationships. "No violation is too small or silly to escape notice of the anti-LGBT crusaders," the report stated. "And targets for investigation have included childrens books, a ninth-grade girl, and video games." Outside of the realm of homophobia-driven, government-backed watchdog groups, the draconian antigay law has spurred a marked uptick in violence, according to HRC. "Witch hunts, arrests, poisonous gas attacks, and murders" are commonplace in modern Russia, writes Ty Cobb, the HRC Foundations global engagement director. "Not only do these terms evoke powerful memories of brutal regimes that fill the pages of history books, they also represent the very real dangers that LGBT people face each and every day in Vladimir Putin's Russia." "The evidence is clear," Cobb continues. "State-sponsored homophobia and transphobia in Russia poses a direct threat to the safety and welfare of LGBT Russians, and that threat is growing." Even the threat of being seen as backwards, a particular sore point for Russia historically, did not deter Putin's acolytes from bearing down hard on foreign and Russian LGBT people during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Despite presidential promises that the Sochi Games would not be a dangerous venue for LGBT athletes and spectators, HRC documented numerous violations of that promise including the arrest of a trans Italian Parliament member who wore rainbow attire.

Shortly after Burlisons St. Louis ruling, Leyh received a text alert from PROMO, Missouris statewide organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality through legislative action and community education. Leyh has been actively involved in PROMO, and her focus since beginning at the Brown School has been social justice and human diversity work. She has primarily assisted in lobbying efforts for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to achieve protection for the LGBT community against discriminatory hiring practices and firing in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Leyh is also involved in OUTLook, the Brown Schools LGBT group, and is a co-president for the Branch Out for Olin. Leyh met Pierce in a class in the Brown School and the classs professor, Anna Shabsin, also a board member for Promo, performed their marriage ceremony. Leyh said she can only speak highly of the Brown School as an incredibly supportive and inclusive community. Although Leyh was not out as an undergraduate, she has since worked with Student Involvement and Leadership to help plan and run the Lavender Recognition Ceremony in 2013.

Healthcare for transgender workers has made significant strides in those companies that participated in this year's CEI. Of the 972 businesses rated, 418 offer transgender workers at least one health care plan that has transgender-inclusive coverage. That's a 22 percent increase since 2012, when the CEI criteria first included trans-inclusive health care as a requisite for companies to receive a perfect score. UI law professor named Florida A&M provost - TheGazette

Marcella David, who first joined the UI law school faculty in 1995, will replace Rodner Wright, who has served as interim provost for the Tallahassee-based institution for the last two years. In addition to her present role as UI professor, David is associate dean for the UI College of Law. She spent five years from 2004 to 2009 in central administration for the university, most recently as the UIs first special assistant to the president for equal opportunity and diversity and associate provost for diversity. UI President Sally Mason said in a statement that she is sad to lose a good friend and great colleague. But, she added, I am thrilled and proud that she will take on this significant new role. She is an outstanding scholar, an exceedingly fine person, and someone who will be absolutely committed to student and faculty success, Mason said. In her new role, according to Florida A&M, David will lead the universitys academic operations, which includes seven schools, seven colleges, and numerous institutes, academic programs, and 700 faculty members. Florida A&M President Elmira Mangum said the nationwide search produced a number of qualified candidates, and David was chosen, in part, for her extensive leadership experience for nearly two decades. A record 366 businesses earned the CEIstop score of 100 this year, but just one of them San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron Corp. is an oil and gas company. Other oil and gas companies that made strides this year are Marathon Oil Corp. of Houston, which improved its score to 75 from 15 last year; and ConocoPhillips of Houston, which increased its score to 75 from 55 the previous year. Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. were also among the sectors top performers. According to the HRC, there were no new survey participants this year from the oil and gas sector, which has the second-worst response rate out of the 40 industries that the organization researches and includes in its annual index. Despite repeated invitations and encouragement to participate, only eight oil and gas companies return their surveys and receive an official CEI rating, said Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundations Workplace Equality Program. The remaining 21 Fortune 500-ranked companies in this sector have unofficial scores that we base on our independent research. Exxon Mobil Corp. is the only company included in the CEI report with a negative rating.

The HRC rates workplaces on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender inclusion and equality, and this year's report shows that there is now greater awareness and understanding of the transgender community. The index rates companies using a variety of factors including the presence of non-discriminatory policies, the existence of transgender-inclusion healthcare, and whether or not there are guidelines in place to encourage transgender inclusion. This year there are a record number of businesses attaining a 100 percent rating, and 14 of these fall into the hardware, software and data services areas of the tech sector. Joining the companies with a perfect score this year are Facebook and Yelp, and Adobe makes an impressive improvement from 90 to 100 percent. Facebook had previously managed to upset the LGBT community with its real names policy. Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundation's Workplace Equality Program, said: Long viewed as thought leaders in business innovation, it's no surprise that computer tech companies continue to be strong leaders in LGBT workplace inclusion. This year, we welcomed two new computer software and hardware companies to the CEI, continuing evidence of the sector's commitment to fairness. 91 percent of Fortune 500 companies include reference to sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policies, while just 61 percent make reference to gender identity. Both figures are up from previous years. President of the HRC, Chad Griffin, believes that US businesses could teach a lot to other sectors: Despite 66 percent of all Fortune 500 companies now including gender identity in the employment protections, we know that this does not always translate into everyday inclusion of the transgender community. Failure to properly follow the ordinance could result in a fine and, worse in the eyes of local businesses, a blow to the reputation of a company. On Nov. 7, the chamber announced its board of directors had voted unanimously to oppose the ordinance and would urge voters and chamber members to vote for the repeal on Dec. 9. Almost immediately, Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan and University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Chancellor David Gearhart both nonvoting ex-officio members of the chamber wrote letters to the chamber to criticize its decision. My position is clear: I believe in equality, diversity and inclusion, said Jordan, who criticized the chamber for holding a vote on the issue without notifying him. Jordan said the complaints about vague wording arent valid, and Fayetteville City Attorney Kit Williams said he was confident the ordinance would survive any legal challenge. Williams was named the city administrator of the ordinance, meaning any complaint about discrimination would first be heard by him. (AP) Maryland's largest school district has voted to strip religious labels from next year's school calendar, including Christian holidays such as Easter and Christmas, and the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. The 7-1 decision Tuesday by Montgomery County's Board of Education comes after Muslim leaders in the community asked that equal recognition be given to the Muslim holy day of Eid al-Adha. Schools still will be closed for the Christian and Jewish holidays and students will get the same days off. Muslim leaders said they were not pleased with the board's decision. They didn't want religious labels removed from the other holidays, just for Muslim students to be treated equally and to have their holidays recognized, said Saqib Ali, a former Maryland state delegate and co-chair of the Equality for Eid Coalition. "By stripping the names Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, they have alienated other communities now, and we are no closer to equality," Ali told The Washington Post. "It's a pretty drastic step, and they did it without any public notification." Ali told WTOP-FM: "Simply saying, 'We're not going to call this Christmas, and we're not going to call this Yom Kippur,' and still closing the schools, that's not equality." Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha fall on the same day next year, which means all students will have off that day. But Muslim leaders say that's just a coincidence and that their efforts to add Muslim holidays to the school calendar were symbolic but important. Muslim parents and community members packed Tuesday's meeting and demonstrated outside, carrying signs that read, "Send them home for the Eid holiday," and "My child is not a second-class citizen." Board members said they sympathized with Muslim parents and students, but that Maryland law prohibits them from closing school for religious reasons. Schools are closed on holidays such as Christmas and Yom Kippur, they say, because of high student and staff absenteeism on those days, which affects school operations.

Allentown's 2014 score jumped from a 50 last year. "The city did fairly well when it comes to the municipality as an employer," said Oakley. The report looked at topics including non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition and law enforcement. "This year there was a police liaison that was appointed to the police force, which is really important," said Oakley. "The city of Allentown has inclusive non-discrimination laws, inclusive meaning both sexual orientation and gender identity." "It also did well in terms of municipal services meaning that it has things that are making sure that the city is acting with the interest of diversity and inclusion in mind," she added. For Long Beach, which recently elected its first openly gay mayor, this year's list marked the city's first perfect score, said Josh Steichmann, spokesman for Equality California, a civil rights group that helped collect data for the list. "The first big place that Long Beach gained points was in updating their city non-discrimination policy to include gender identity, ensuring that transgender employees were covered," Steichmann siad. "The second big place they improved was in adding transgender coverage to the city's health care plans." The city now also offers specific LGBT youth programs through the city-funded Center for Families and Youth, he said. Having LGBT people in visible leadership positions helps a city's ranking as well. Garcia recently joined the governing board of Equality California. The list is not meant to be a list of the best places for LGBT people to live, because it only evaluates policies, and does not do surveys on quality of life, Steichmann said. Although the council seemed uncertain of a direction it eventually voted 5-2 to approve a motion by Councilman Henry Leger to consider an ordinance, pledge or statement to take a stand on discrimination. Dickey said the initial requests to address non-discrimination first came in February when the state was embroiled in the SB 1062 debate and ultimately vetoed by Governor Jan Brewer. Senate Bill 1062 was designed to protect businesses from lawsuits if they refused to provide services to gay or lesbian couples. The local, municipal level is the appropriate place to enact non-discrimination, Dickey added. While the federal government provides some protections against unfair treatment of certain classes, Constitutional attorneys agreed during the SB 1062 discussions that even those could arguably be in jeopardy. It is also clear that the State of Arizona will not be inclined to expand or enhance equal rights in the near future. Capability Councilman Dennis Brown said he is not so sure Fountain Hills can handle such an ordinance. Does the Town of Fountain Hills have the resources to effectively administer such a policy? Brown asked, I dont believe so. Fountain Hills has always been an open, welcoming community. I dont believe we are ready for this. Leger said it should be noted that the town spelled out very specific non-discrimination rules in town policy approved in August 2013. That policy applies specifically to what the town personnel issues. It does not protect any citizens from discrimination related to interactions with businesses or people.

Board members said Tuesday that the new calendar will reflect days the state requires the system to be closed and that it will close on other days that have shown a high level of student and staff absenteeism. Though those days happen to coincide with major Christian and Jewish holidays, board members made clear that the days off are not meant to observe those religious holidays, which they say is not legally permitted. The main and most noticeable difference will be that the published calendar will not mention any religious holidays by name. Muslim community leaders have been asking Montgomery school officials for years to close schools for at least one of the two major Muslim holidays. It is unclear how many Muslim students attend Montgomery schools, but in 2013, Muslim community leaders urged Muslim families and their supporters to keep students home for Eid al-Adha, hoping that the number of absentees would be persuasive as they made their case for a school closing. Montgomery school officials reported that absences for that day 5.6 percent of students and 5 percent of teachers were only somewhat higher than a comparable day the previous week. (AP) Maryland's largest school district has voted to strip religious labels from next year's school calendar, including Christian holidays such as Easter and Christmas, and the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. The 7-1 decision Tuesday by Montgomery County's Board of Education comes after Muslim leaders in the community asked that equal recognition be given to the Muslim holy day of Eid al-Adha. Schools still will be closed for the Christian and Jewish holidays and students will get the same days off. Muslim leaders said they were not pleased with the board's decision. They didn't want religious labels removed from the other holidays, just for Muslim students to be treated equally and to have their holidays recognized, said Saqib Ali, a former Maryland state delegate and co-chair of the Equality for Eid Coalition. "By stripping the names Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, they have alienated other communities now, and we are no closer to equality," Ali told The Washington Post. "It's a pretty drastic step, and they did it without any public notification." Ali told WTOP-FM: "Simply saying, 'We're not going to call this Christmas, and we're not going to call this Yom Kippur,' and still closing the schools, that's not equality." Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha fall on the same day next year, which means all students will have off that day. But Muslim leaders say that's just a coincidence and that their efforts to add Muslim holidays to the school calendar were symbolic but important. Muslim parents and community members packed Tuesday's meeting and demonstrated outside, carrying signs that read, "Send them home for the Eid holiday," and "My child is not a second-class citizen." Board members said they sympathized with Muslim parents and students, but that Maryland law prohibits them from closing school for religious reasons.

"We worked really hard to get that program back, and a big part of us getting that program back was from the effects that the Geier Mandate had on UT," Smith said. Rita maintained when the Geier Mandate was in effect and the summer programs were being funded, UT saw the highest percentage of African-American students attend the university. In recent years, the attendance of African-American students at UT has steadily dropped from 10 percent to 7 percent.

Three same-sex couples in Tennessee are joining couples in Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio in asking the Supreme Court to take up the case the Sixth Circuit just ruled on. "You can't have some circuits saying this, other circuits saying this, the law in four states being this, and the rest of the states being this," McDaniel said. "It won't happen. It will go to the United States Supreme Court and they'll now have to rule on this issue because of the Sixth Circuit and what their decision has been." Both gay marriage supporters and opponents are fired up in Tennessee about this ruling. Gay marriage supporters and opponents haven't stopped sharing their opinions since the decision dropped Thursday afternoon. Don Russell is the pastor at Park City Baptist in Lincoln County and he said it's a great feeling after having other courts ruling gay marriage bans unconstitutional in recent months. A rally is planned in Chattanooga for Friday at 7 p.m. and Nooga Diversity Center leaders said it is a small bump in the road in their fight for marriage equality.

Pledging to continue his fight "against transphobia and homophobia," Ban told a crowd gathered at the U.N.'s Vienna headquarters. "Discrimination has no place in the United Nations, nor in the world of the 21st century." "I stand strong for equality," Ban said. "We are unstoppable," he added, quoting Wurst's words on the night of her victory at this year's Eurovision song contest. Praising Wurst as "promoting respect for diversity," Ban said "she confounds people's preconceived ideas of gender and sexuality - and she appeals to them to accept her as she is. That is a powerful message." The bearded Austrian diva said she dreamt of "a future where we don't have to talk about sexual orientation or the color of your skin." This is really to show the diversity of Latin America and South America as well. There will be performances, poems, theres going to be a lot of artistic showcases to illustrate the diversity within the Latino community. Dia de los Muertos is split into two separate celebrations. Nov. 1 is the day to remember the souls of children, or Dia de los Inocentes. They are honored with special designs in the altars, using the color white on flowers and candles. The day to remember deceased adults takes place Nov. 2. MAS has held many outreach programs for the community to cover issues such as how women are treated at the U.S.-Mexico border, farmworker awareness and equality for the Hispanic community. Its annual El Color de Nuestra Tierra was made to promote and bring awareness to the equality issues still in the U.S., and Martinez said the focus on combining the importance of the rare indigenous cultures of Latin America with the tradition of Dia de los Muertos is a smart way to do it.

Despite 'lean In,' Workplace Equality Remains Abysmal - Nov. 7, 2014

That's according to a new report released Thursday by Mercer, a global consulting company, which examined data of more than 1.7 million employees at 164 companies in 28 countries. Businesses are ignoring female talent. Even though women make up 41% of the workforce globally, few make the decisions at the top. Instead, they're working support roles in lower levels. We are in the midst of Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In campaign and the #GirlBoss movement, but the numbers overall are still abysmal. Out of the organizations surveyed, 36% of women are at the managerial level, 26% are in senior management and only 19% are executives. To get those numbers more balanced, Mercer found that it isn't enough to just provide women with programs like flexible work schedules and leave policies. The only way to have true change is for management to make female leadership -- and equal pay -- a priority. Related: Women build bigger businesses "A significant number of CEOs and very senior male executives say the most important thing is that their senior executives actually understand the economic development of having a diverse workforce and are held accountable," said Pat Milligan, president of Mercer's North America region.

"I think it depends on where they're located, and it depends on their position in a company," said Wendy Patrick, a business ethics lecturer at San Diego State University.
